What's the difference between a "Repat" Policy and GHIC card?
EEA member states are required to treat UK citizens with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). However, in some cases—such as injuries from hazardous sports—hospitals may reject EHIC/GHIC or only cover part of the costs. This is why travel and repatriation insurance is essential for overseas track days and off-road riding, as medical bills can quickly accumulate, even at public hospitals. Neither the EHIC nor GHIC covers repatriation to the UK, whether for you or someone accompanying you for medical reasons. Repatriation costs can be significant, especially if you cannot fly in a regular plane seat or need medical supervision during the journey. BeMoto repatriation insurance provides up to £100k for medical repatriation (or £50k in case of death). In some instances, insurers may also cover the cost of flying relatives out to support you while you're receiving treatment overseas, which EHIC or GHIC would not cover. Ensure all medical questions are answered honestly when purchasing travel insurance, as pre-existing conditions are excluded unless declared and accepted by the insurer. Always buy the policy before leaving the UK, and make sure it covers the entire trip duration.
